Montgomery is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in the Muskingum County seat of Lima. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. The Montgomery School District served students from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade as of 2013. The first settler in what is now Montgomery was Nicholas de la Salle who arrived there on a ship in 1798 and named it after himself, "Montgomery." He had come from Canada and founded the village of Port Dover on the Maumee River about fourteen miles south of where Montgomery now stands. De la Salle's village remained until 1814 when it was destroyed by fire while under construction by his brother-in-law, Solomon Northrup. A new village site was chosen and construction began on the current Montgomery courthouse which opened in 1816. In 1819 George Washington visited Montgonry for two weeks during hisarcrossing tour of western Ohio and Indiana before returning eastward via Cincinnati to Mount Vernon where he stayed for three days before sailing back home through that port city once again on the USS Constitution.. In that year, too, Montigonry had its historical moment with news spread throughout America that General Andrew Jackson had been elected President over John Quincy Adams because no other candidate could receive a majority of electoral votes despite being nominated by both political parties! All told more than 2,000 men participated and approximately 640 acres were burned resulting in loss or damage to more than 100 homes & churches valued at $1 million dollars today ...... so yes one did experience firsthand what these conflicts entailed directly affecting their community......
