Montgomery, Ohio is located in the eastern portion of the United States and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a thousand years. The first European to visit Montgomery was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1564. In 1810, General James H. Kapp founded an artillery company here and began manufacturing cannons and ammunition. By 1814, Montgomery had become one of the leading centers for production of artillery projectiles in the United States. In 1824, Congress passed a bill allowing private individuals to own and operate arsenals for producing firearms and munitions. This legislation opened up new opportunities for businesses such as Kapp’s armory and made Montgomery one of the most important arsenals in America. The production of cannonball ammunition increased rapidly here throughout the 19th century until it reached its peak during World War I due to advances in technology. Montgomery was founded in 1795 by James Montgomery and is today a census-designated place in Brown County, Ohio. It was formerly the county seat of Brown County. The population of Montgomery at the 2010 census was 9,824.
