A post office was established at Monroe in 1825, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. Monroe’s early growth came about due to its location on high ground between two major waterways – the Cuyahoga River on one side and Lake Erie on the other – which made it an ideal place for settlement. By 1800, more than 100 families had moved to this area from various parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. The town began to grow rapidly during the 19th century thanks to its good transportation connections, plentiful natural resources (including coal and lumber), and easy access to markets in Cleveland and other cities across Western Ohio. During World War I, thousands of workers from eastern Toledo were brought overland into central Ohio to help build up our military effort; many residents were also drafted into service or took jobsLoader activity started soon after war ended that would last throughout most of postwar AmericaMurdock continued to lead local development until his death in 1925; subsequent leaders included J P Cahill (1929-35)and W H Goode (1936-39). This gave Monroe more control over its own affairs and allowed it to become known as "the City on the River". The Warehouse District located around State Street downtown remains home to many small businesses today despite gentrification throughout Greater Toledo since Toledo replaced their manufacturing base with service-sector jobs in recent decades. On October 15, 2018, Mayor Jim Ambrosius announced that he would not seek reelection after 36 years at office
