When the Monroe Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1876, it was a small group of men who were interested in pistols and rifles. The club bought its first pistol in 1879 and soon became known for its fine firearms. In 1905, the Monroe Rifle and Pistol Club moved to its current location on West Washington Street. The building has been occupied by the club since that time. The club’s history is reflective of the community it serves. It has worked hard to make sure that everyone who visits it feels welcome and comfortable. This includes ensuring that all visitors have a chance to learn about guns, NRA programming, and more. Over the years, the club has donated many weapon systems to local organizations such as law enforcement agencies and schools. In 2019, members of the Monroe Rifle & Pistol Club celebrated their centennial anniversary with a large parade down West Washington Street followed by an event at the gunsmith shop where they repaired firearms during the day while residents enjoyed views of downtown Monroe from their homes.

In 1803, General George Washington visited Monroe while he was on his way to visit Canada, and even though Washington did not stay long in Monroe (he only stayed for a day), his visit left an indelible impression on the people there. The town was platted in 1792 by Alexander Monckton and named after James Monroe, who became President of Virginia in 1801. Monroe began as a small farming community with just 10 residents when it was chosen as the site of a new state capital in 1800. By 1803, however, Monroe had grown into what would become one of Ohio's most important towns because of its strategic location between two major American rivers – The Muskingum River and Lake Erie – as well as its importance due to its role as a key stop on stagecoaches traveling between Cincinnati and Philadelphia. In 1835–36, Monroe became home to one of America's first public libraries when it opened along with nearby Uniontown under terms set by then-Senator John Quincy Adams; that same year saw also Cleveland's incorporation as a city after becoming Tippecanoe County following victory over neighboring Medina county in an election campaign fought largely on civil rights grounds. In 1861–1865 during the American Civil War (the war that eventually ended slavery across all Northeastern America), Perrysburg— located about 12 miles southeast of Monroe—became known as "The Arsenal of Liberty," thanks to its strong support for Confederate forces against Union forces led by Ulysses S. Grant; this area later came to be known as central Ohio due to this particular battle/incident alone. Afterward, many soldiers from Perrysburg moved back into their homes within minutes of learning about Union troops advancing towards them from surrounding villages; these houses are still standing today and are considered reminiscent examples of early 20th century agriculture due to their unusual design features (e.g., corrugated iron roofs).
