In 1890, construction began on what would become America's largest factory - John Dennison Rubber Company - and this led to an increase in jobs for residents of Monroe. By 1920, there were over 1,000 residents living in Monroe and it had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with businesses such as JDS rubber company and Belmont Paper Mills doing significant business here. However, during World War II much of Monroee's production went into shipbuilding due to wartime demand for rubber products However since then things have not been too good for Monroe; crime rates have increased significantly while unemployment has climbed steadily throughout recent years reaching 10%. Monroe has a rich history dating back to 1814 when John C Monaghan and his brother-in-law Nicholas Griggs settled in what is now Monroe Township on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Ohio River. At first they built simple log cabins, but they soon erected more elaborate structures including a cabin used as an jail during the American Revolution; a courthouse which served as an appellate court until it burned down in 1796; and a schoolhouse which became home to Trumbull County’s first public school district in 1819/20]. In1828/29, when Trumbull County was created from parts of Hardin and Lucas counties, Monroe became part of its newly formed jurisdiction In 1830 John Monaghan ran for Congress as a Democrat against incumbent Whig Major General Moses Cleaveland but lost without controversy In 1840 he again ran for Congress but this time he won handily against Whig candidate David Fenton In 1850 businessman Augustus Kelley bought land adjacent to Monroe from Griggs for $2 per acre After becoming interested in agriculture, Kelley developed what is now known as “Kelley” farmland into one of Trumbull County’s most important agricultural communities through his various enterprises such as flour mills, cheese factories and other livestock operations The growth of these businesses attracted many people - both new immigrants (many coming via boat) and refugees fleeing across Lake Erie – who began settling hereabouts starting around 1800 [ Monoghan Woods Cemetery contains graves of some of these early settlers ]. One group led by Revolutionary War veteran Michael Brown moved into what would become downtown Monroe in about 1830 while others followed suit over time [Trumbull University stands today on land once occupied by Brown’s farmstead]. As business boomed and arearesidentry grew increasingly middle class or better off overall prices for food items declined precipitously due largely to railroad construction nearby . By 1870 there were only 3 remaining landowners left within Monroe Township – all farmers – while 149 residents lived nearest businesses . This development meant that most people living near commercial areas either worked their farms or took long walks to get their daily bread . Traffic congestion problem also arose because transportation options were limited distance away from town center [the present day intersection of State Route 12 (now US 270) & Elm Street]; streetcar service started running between Trumbull City & Medina just north of town limits in 1889], making it difficult for people living further out to get around town even if they wanted To do so . Despite this limitation however local merchants did continue selling goods “beyond” town limits despite high costs associated with doing so .. traffic congestionproblem also arisen because transportation options were limited distance away from town center [the present day intersection of State Route 12 (now US 270) & Elm Street]; streetcar service started running between Trumbull City & Medina just north of town Limits
