TheRevolution began there on October 15, 1775 when British troops arrived in that territory to support General George Washington's military campaign against the French and Indian War. Monroe quickly became involved in supporting the war effort and soon developed close relationships with both Washington and France. On November 10, 1775, Monroe ratified a treaty between Britain and France that ceded all of Northwest Ohio to America. Monroe continued to grow as an important center for trade and commerce during the Revolution. In addition to its role as a commercial center, Monroe also served as a base for the American military efforts in the war. After independence was achieved, Monroe rapidly transitioned from being an agricultural community into becoming one of America's largest cities.
Monroe, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Clark County. The population was 61,821 at the 2010 census. Monroe is located on the Scioto River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Cleveland and 25 miles (40 km) west of Dayton. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1792 by Captain James Monroe as Monontonimo or Monongalia Township on land purchased from the Muskingum Nation by Colonel John Monongahela II. In 1801, Monroe was chosen as captain general of American forces during the War for Independence and became its first president. He donated land to form The University of Michigan in 1837 and helped to create what is now downtown Monroe City in 1868 when he donated land for a courthouse and school district. He also served as state prosecutor in both 1842 and 1853 before leaving office to become an United States ambassador to Russia in 1850. He died there two years later at age 83 after serving as America's first high commissioner to Europe since Confederation. In 1898, following his death, his wife Martha Washington Polk donated $200,000 towards establishing a public library system in town which opened its doors to everyone in 1899; this gift remains one of the largest single donations ever made to any municipal library system worldwide!
