Monroe is a small, farming town in the United States located in the central part of the state of Ohio. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskingum County. Monroe was founded in 1812 by John Monro and his brother Jameson Monro. In 1814 it became a town and in 1827 it became a city. The current mayor is Andrew Gillum, who was elected on November 3, 2018. The town began as an agricultural community with cornfields, soybeans, and cattle kept on nearby farms until the early 1800s when tractors replaced those animals for cotton cultivation. A flour mill built in 1865 started manufacturing bread and other goods for eastern markets but closed its doors by 1889; local farmers continued to grow maize (beans) until World War II, when mills resumed production of flour for local consumption only. A post office was established at Monroe in 1825; it remained operational until 1907 when it was moved to Muskingum City. In 1830, John Monro organized a group of men including himself and his brother Jameson Monro to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) near what is now downtown Monroe from Archibald Morrissey for $1 per acre (0.50 hectare). From that location they developed what became known as "the Monros' Bottom". They raised corn, beans and hay while also developing a system of canals to irrigate their land which permitted them to continue growing crops into the 20th century without irrigation assistance from outside sources such as Lake Erie or Buffalo Harbor As one result of their hard work and innovation, Monroe has been awarded numerous honors over its many years Including being named one of America's "Top 10 Towns For Growth" by Forbes magazine twice during its tenure between 2002-2006 Monroe also earned accolades from both national organizations such as The American Planning Association (APA) which bestowed upon it their prestigious Award for Sustainable Communities 2007-2008 Additionally since 2006 - every year on Main Street weekend there areractor/car show nights hosted by local businesses called "Live & Let Live" catering specifically to young families who enjoy exploring new areas off main street
