Monroe, Ohio is a small town located in Butler County, Ohio on the Scioto River. The population was 1,701 at the 2010 census. The first gunsight in Monroe was made by Eli Whitney and it used an eye piece and a mirror to aim. The first handguns were created in 1836 by John Browning and they had no sights other than peepers. In 1861, the Union soldier Ulysses S. Grant took over command of Fort Monmouth in Monroe and ordered all guns to be brought down from their mounts so that they could be dismounted and placed into storage within the fort. This event is known as "Grant's Gun Ban". During World War I, Monroe became home to many American munitions plants including Bethlehem Steel Company which manufactured cannons for the war effort. In 1924, Monroe's only grocery store closed its doors due to economic depression and lack of customers. However, since then many different businesses have opened up around town including a hotel (2009), a post office (1927), a bank (2008), several restaurants (2006-2010) as well as two schools: one public school which serves students grades kindergarten through eighth grade and another private school which serves students grades nine through twelve. There has been talk of expanding the town's boundaries but no decisions have been made yet about what would happen next

The economy stagnated following Reconstruction until World War II when businessman George Whitney started manufacturing munitions in nearby Utica County and began bringing jobs to Monroe through his company Monteco Manufacturing Company Limited (MMCL). The war led to increased demand for munitions throughout all parts of America with military production becoming more common; thus increasing employment opportunities for locals as well as new immigrants who were drawn to wartime opportunities in larger metropolitan areas like Detroit or New York City. After World War II ended1945Monroe experienced rapid growth due largely to two factors: postwar suburban migration into central Ohioan communities such as Athens (now Dayton), Springfield Township (now Over-the-Rhine), Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport outside Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky University (now Wooster)and Cincinnati’s rapidly growing university system which produced over twenty thousand workers between 1945 and 1970gateway city job market boom". The name originated from General James Monroe's visit to the area two years earlier and his proclamation that "The County of Monmouth shall be called Monroe."
