Monroe is a small town in the shadow of the University of Michigan. It was founded in 1811 by George Monongalia, a settler from upstate New York. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location near the new Toledo and Erie Railroad. Monroe's heyday occurred during the late 19th century when it became one of the most important gun towns in Ohio. In 1924, Monroe voters passed a resolution authorising the city of Toledo to sell guns to residents of Monroe. This initiative marked the first time that municipalities had authorised sale of firearms within their borders. In 1938, Monroe voters again passed a resolutionauthorising Toledo to sell guns to residents of Monroe. This event helped solidify Toledo's status as one of Ohio's major firearm markets. During World War II, Monroe played an important role in supplying ammunition for both American and British troops stationed in North America. The town also conducted research on ammunition production methods and experimented with new ammunition types. After World War II, Monroe slowly lost its importance as a gun town though it continued to be vibrant with economic activity related to munitions manufacturing and trade until 1994 when local gun dealers amalgamated into federally licensed manufacturers (FALM). Monroe, Ohio is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe was founded by fur traders in 1796 and became a town in 1807. The city was named for James Monroe, 9th president of the United States (1781-1825). In 1912, Monroe became one of two cities in Ohio to become affiliated with the United Automobile Manufacturers Association (UAMA). The first permanent settler in what would become Monroe was David Neely who arrived on July 14, 1796 from Kentucky with his family. He built a log cabin on the side of a hill overlooking what would become downtown Monroe today. The land where he settled is now called Neely's Hill and it still stands today as part of downtown Monroe’s core area which includes much of current day centered around First National Bank building and Park Plaza shopping center/residence complex including school districts 1st and 2nd wards; blocks north and east are currently home to Stonington Elementary School District 6A & 7A serving grades K-8th grade, while blocks south include Bellefontaine Middle School District 5B & 6B serving grades 9-12th grade; Additionally, blocks west include portions of Blocks 1-3 served by Bellefontaine High School District 1A&1B serving grades 9-12th grade; Finally Blocks 4-6 serve as extraterritorial jurisdiction of Bellefontaine Township not subject to village or township governance David Neely's heirs sold their holdings to John Herrington on November 12, 1800 for $5200 payable within 10 years or 100 acres surveyed for them with an additional $4000 per year until they had purchased an additional 400 acres extending into what would eventually become Downtown Monroe Herrington renamed his new community "Monroe" after James Monrovia – then President George Washington’s brother – making it one of only two places in America bearing that name . On January 25, 1807, following authorization from Congress under Article IV Section 2 thereof regarding Indian nations engaged in hostilities against the United States “And all other territories acquired by this Constitution during said War….the thing hereby provided for shall continue until such time as such Nations may be discharged from their allegiance or may have agreed peaceably to be attached thereto” As part of this agreement Great Britain ceded sovereignty over all Native American nations eastward along the line laid down by Pierre Elliott Trudeau when Operation Rolling Thunder began on December 26, 1937 including present day Michigan Territory In 1828 General Solomon Gruenwald obtained a Donation Land Claim Agreement from Chief Tecumseh near present day Monroeville Village southwest corner lot #41 which included most parts adjoining known as "Old Cherokee Nation". This donation resulted in Gruenwald getting title to about 640 acres lying northwest sideagy stretching from Bushnell Road southwesterly upriver about 8 miles to Little Miami River just above its confluence with Scioto River hereabout . By 1830 there were more than 300 settlers living along both sidesacross Little Miami Creek Valley . For many years prior to 1830 no white person ever set foot upon any portion owned by Chief Tecumseh excepting men employed generally among his tribemen attending him as hunters etc., typical lands thus being accessible only through special permission granted either individually or collectively by tribal leaders according to certain restrictions placed upon hunting privileges within their reserves…In consequence thereof large quantities annually were accumulated throughout these upland portions especially near Bushnell road crossing creek so flowing but little below its bed , never having been disturbed since purchase ; About 1800 several Indians made application setting forth that they had Lots Nos.# 42 & 43 situated immediately opposite Old Cherokee Nation aforesaid [sic] belonging unto them at one time containing upwardsoof 600 Acres frontage high ground watered abundantly by watercourse running through their possession thenceforward sd lots have been denied us because we claimed them privately thro' private channels thru our agent On July 14, 1796 David Neely built a log cabin on what would become downtown Monroe today after arriving in America via French Canada aboard HMS DragonflyFRN off Quebec City harbor
