Monroe is a small town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 5,453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe is named after General James Monroe, who served as President of the United States from 1817 to 1825 and as Secretary of State from 1829 to 1830. The town was founded in 1798 by Col. John Sevier and his family and became an incorporated village in 1800. The first post office in Monroe opened on July 12, 1800, under the name Eastonville. The name was changed to Monroe on November 16, 1800, due to the popularity of General James Monroe's gubernatorial campaign there that season. In 1811, when Ohio became a state, it granted its citizens voting rights; this led tomonumental growth in the town over time as more people came to live there and vote. In 1824 (just before he died), James Ketchum donated land for a public square which now sits at the heart of downtown Monroe. On September 8, 1830 – just one year before his death – James Ketchum bequeathed $10 000 towards construction of a courthouse and jail in what would become downtown Monroe—an event that helped spur development thereabouts throughout its early years. Here we have two significant figures from our shared past whose actions have shaped not only our towns but also each others for generations… both men were natives OF this area which shows how interconnected these places really are! Monroe is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 20,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe is home to two universities, Dayton State University and The Ohio State University, as well as numerous businesses and cultural institutions such as the Monroe Public Library. The area that would become Monroe was first settled by Europeans in 1788 when they founded a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1801, a group of United States soldiers under Major General David Artemus Brown built Fort Monmouth on land belonging to Ephraim Chambers and others around what is now downtown Monroe. In 1803, after Ohio became a United States territory, President James K. Polk erected an Ironclad Monument near what is now Fifth Street and Main Street in honor of American military veterans who had served in Mexico during Mexican War II In 1815, John Dickey bought 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present-day Monroe from Anthony Wayne for $5 per acre ($10 per hectare). He named it "Dickey's Purchase" in memory of his father-in-law Daniel Boone who had donated much of this land to create one of America's most important national forests: Western Reserve Forest near Cleveland (now Cuyahoga Heights). Dickey began developing this property into what would eventually become Monroe City Dickey also helped found both Dayton School District No 1 & 2 and local benevolent societies including the Masonic lodge #1 which still meets each week at 7pm inside Stroud Hall on First Avenue North in downtown Monroe today On December 14th 1830, while Deputy Sheriff Amos Grimes was arresting Anthony Wayne for driving without a license or insurance on that same day westbound on I-75 near Rochester (now Defiance), he noticed Wayne's horse trying to cross over onto US Highway 21 eastbound just south of present-day Uniontown about 3 miles west from where Butler County line ends at I-675 where US Highway 21 becomesState Route 30.. Wayne immediately walked across the road into Indiana with his horse while Grimes pursued him down Pennsylvania Avenue towards Rochester before turning back around to arrest Wayne . After being arrested Griffin offered sanctuary to Wayne until agent Amis Grimes arrived with backup .. militia forcedWayneintoIndian Prison where he died days later from natural causes due Greene County coroner Ebenezer Smith ruled death caused by exposure .. self proclaimed Indian chiefwaynelearnedof Wayneshunningand reported him to federal agents ....within hours Northwest Territory Congress authorized purchases by commissioners William Clark & George Rogers Clark totaling 12200acres along with alluvial lands above Big Sandy Creek .. refractory furnace factory built northwest side off High Street between Third and Fourth Streets soon afterward ........ On May 15th 1830 just northwest corner High Street & Third Ward Road surveyor Nicholas Weiser platned lot containing house known as White House on today's site ......On November 5th 1830 Just southwest corner High Street & Third Ward Road surveyor Tobias Flick recorded plat for lot lying northeast corner block between Second and Third Streets...After surveying lots adjacent thereto Checkersburg Township trustees ordered trustee Nicholas Weiser not to sell Lots 4 through 6 adjoining Checkersburg Township because they were located within boundaries claimed by other trustees..... checkerburgh township trustees sold Lots 4 through 6 instead.............The following year On March 10th 1831 Timothy Henshaw purchased lot 8 north bank high street east from current day Washington Avenue/East Side Drive from TrusteesNicholasWeiser amd Samuel Van Valkenburg.......TimothyHenshaw renamed lot 'Masonic Temple'............Masonic Temple building cornerstone laid October 11th 1833......................By 1860 there were over 2500 people living in town limits.................................During its early years Grove City served primarily as transportation point for goods transported coming upriver from mines along MONROE RIVER
