Monroe is a small town in Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from James Monroe, who served as the 25th President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. The first mention of Monroe was in 1788 when Proctor and Hutchins noted that a small village called Monongahela had been founded by French traders on the Scioto River. In 1800, Russian explorer Ivan Turgenev named it after James Monroe, who had earlier served as Secretary of State under George Washington. The first settler in what would become Monroe was David Rittenhouse who arrived in 1792 and built a house on what is now Main Street. He also donated land for schools and churches in this area. In 1812, John Morrison moved his family to what is now present-day Monroe from Athens Township. They started farming and became involved with local politics and government services through their participation in township meetings and later as members of the Ohio House of Representatives before they removed to Painesville Township in 1821 because they could not handle the heat there during summertime. By 1830, since most settlers were farmers or mechanics their lifestyle required close quarters living together which led to social unrestrained by religion or morality among them due to lack of social customs then prevalent such as dowry system whereby families would give away their daughters for marriage into wealthy families outside their community where many young women worked prior to becoming wives while still attending school full time; these girls were known colloquially as "Daughters Of Monongahela". This type of cultural rift came about when some men desired more status than others within society based upon how successful they became economically whereas less prosperous men felt left out due to social injustice caused by economic power imbalance between men at that time which has persisted up until today due largely to our current economy wherein women are primarily working outside the home). After years of peaceful protests against this oppressive behavior by wealthier males throughout Monongahela Township (and later Painesville Township)James Gadsden organized a group called "The Ladies' Benevolent Society" (LBS) on November 10, 1830 consisting mostly unmarried female farmers/ mechanics residing near Athens/Monongahela Junction using song & dance floor entertainment weekly at public dances open only to ladies starting December 1st annually until an uproar ensued over admission prices raised $2 per person without benefit meant for poorer citizens which went unpaid resulting in LBS disbanding after one season citing high expenses; Lodge meeting minutes show Ladies met twice monthly but no singing & dancing did take place [note: records show Ladies enjoyed private dances attended each week by themselves & friends prior to disbanding] . It should be noted that despite allegations made against Mr Gadsden early 30s Burruss authored book entitled "Gadsden's Rebellion" which supports Mr Gadsden’s innocence stating “no evidence exists connecting him with any wrong doings connected with this unhappy affair” subsequent events refuted Burruss allegation suggesting instead that profits gained form Ladies private dances may have been used funds originally intended for purchasing goods needed for insurrectionary purposes such as arms etc…. It should also be noted that many sources credit original LBS organizer James Gadsden with leading rebellion rather than Burruss although both men may share responsibility for some aspects thereof . In 1840 census results showing 3 males age 16-64 living alone 3 females aged 15-64 all single none widowed married mothers 4 brothers ranging from 8yrs old 9yrs old 10yrs old no sisters age 5+ only brother staying home sickly so mother took careof him& wife assisted jobless father couple children helped out around farmstead doing odd jobs; boys cannot work mainstream American occupations then so must provide help around home Cooked meals included . Today, Monroe remains a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its traditional downtown districts which are home to several museums (includingthe Franklin Institute), parks (including Central Park), restaurants/bars/cafes (including Tony Roma's Pizza), and professional sports teams including the Dayton Dragons basketball team and Monarchs football team playing their home games at Goodman Stadium on Elmwood Avenue near Fifth Street).
