The first upper receiver to be made in the city was a French pattern rifle called the LaChasse that was manufactured by George Wilkinson in 1818. The city's first gunsmith, John Prentice, also manufactured rifles and pistols. In 1875, Hapsburg Arms Company began manufacturing rifles and shotguns in Monroe. In 1905, Winchester Repeating Arms Company moved its manufacturing operations from Hartford, Connecticut to Monroe. Winchester continued to produce firearms here until 1992 when it merged with Remington Arms Company.
Monroe is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Clark County. The population was 23,774 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Monroe is located on the Scioto River, east of Dayton and west of Akron. The first settlement in what would become Monroe was made by Major General John Moncrief and his men as they traveled through this area sometime between 1795-1796 while fighting for Lord Howe during the Northwest Company war against France. The town was named after General Moncrief's hometown in England - Monroe-on-the-Hudson (now Newburgh). In 1802, President James K. Polk granted land to Captain Amos Brown for a new town site on Scioto River, but it never became a reality because of lack of funding from Congress or other sources. In 1807, another group led by Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 200 acres (80 hectares) near present day Monroe from Daniel Boone for $200 (). This community was called Forrestville after Forrest's famous ride into Cincinnati over the Great Miami OH river bottoms on November 2nd, 1807 (). The first store opened in this community on February 14th, 1808 (). Monroe Township formed from parts of Clark County in 1840 and soon had a population exceeding 1,000 residents (). A post office called "Monroe" was established at this time and remained open until 1902; however, it only received mail from Jefferson County Residents due to distance issues until that time. On February 26th,1856 local officials convened an election to select trustees for schools created as part of township wide reform efforts following a law passed by Congress that year which provided funds for school construction statewide (). Incumbent Joby Willard easily won reelection with over 97 percentof the vote () even though he had not lived within township limits since 1850 when he moved to Defiance Township northeast of Lima to run for office there(). After serving two terms as trustee(), Willard decided to retire rather than seek re-election again on account of his age.. On October 3rd 1865 his son Joby Willard Jr., who had also served as trustee during his father's initial term resigned effective immediately due to ill health () leaving behind three trustees - Samuel Cutter (from Medina Township), Horace Farnsworth (from Union Township) & George Waring (from Clinton Township)). Three more trustees were elected at special elections held later that month but never served any longer than one year before being replaced by their successors based upon reappointment rules then in place. Two years later on May 7th 1868 – now almost 100 years old – Samuel Cutter died suddenly at home unexpectedly aged 73 years old suddenly making him ineligible to serve any longer having outlived all predecessors except one! Consequently Horace Farnsworth took up Samuel Cutter's mantle becoming facto sole trustee remaining so until his death just shy Of 101 Years Old On December 5th 1888 when George Waring reached 102 Years Old! Finally George Wared resigned effective January 3rd 1889 citing poor health…thus ending an era where only two trustees ever served beyond one year! A post office called "Monroe" was established at this time and remained open until 1902; however, it only received mail from Jefferson County Residents due to distance issues until that time

Monroe, Ohio is a small town in the extreme south-central region of Ohio. It has a population of about 18,000 people and is the county seat for Monmouth County. The name was given to it by General James Monroe in 1803 after he became President of the United States. Monroe was one of the original thirteen states created from Virginia when it seceded from British America in 1776. The area that would become Monroe was part of Scioto County until 1814, when it became part of Monmouth County. The first store in what would become Monroe opened its doors on October 25, 1830. From 1830 to 1840, there were only two stores in the community. In 1845, JH Boyd built a gristmill which helped begin up the town's flour trade and set off an agricultural industry that continues to this day. The first school in Monroe opened its doors on November 3, 1850. A large brick building stood on State Street until 1906 when it was destroyed by fire; however, plans for a new school were already underway before that happened. Enrollment at first was low because most villagers had to take jobs enjoyed by more prosperous residents back home due to lack of education opportunities hereabouts; but with perseverance and hard work over time things changed dramatically as teachers and students took advantage of available resources. In 1870-71 there were twenty-one schools open across Monmouth County while eighty percent of households possessed at least one person who could read and write! By 1921-22 enrollment had increased from 1,024 to 2,048! With no end in sight for growth or development – not even during World War II – future generations are guaranteed an exciting glimpse into how successful this community can be if they continue striving… today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders! In recent years efforts have been made towards revitalization including demolishing some older buildings and constructing new ones; however progress has been slow due both to funding shortages as well as opposition from those who feel their way of life should stay unchanged rather than be threatened by change or potential competition……………………………………………………………..
