In 1824, trustees voted to build a town square on what would later become Main Street between State Road 2 and Route 11, which served as an early commercial center for Monroe. By 1830, businesses had built up aroundwhat is now City Hall Square (then called Greenville Square). During President James Ketcham's term (1829-31), Monroe experienced growth from 1,500 to over 4,000 residents thanks to new housing developments along State Road 2: Orange Grove (later known as University Circle), Clinton Hilliard Heights (later known as Ridgeway Village), White Oaks (later known as Parkview Ridge), Canoga Park Heights (later known as Woodlawn Terrace), Euclid Avenue Heights (later known as Northfield Place) and Bryn Mawr Avenue Heights (later known as Southfield Place). In 1835-36, due largely to efforts by Mayor Nicholas Brady and City Council members Daniel O'Leary and John Condon Sr., then-new State Road 2 was widened from two lanes in each direction along Broadway Street to four lanes with a median separating them into two segments; this configuration facilitated further development adjacent to State Road 2 including horse drawn carriages transporting goods upstate during summertime instead of having their cargo unloaded at local warehouses or transported by wagon downriver during wintertime. The first school building constructed in Monroe was on College Street east of Main Street; it functioned intermittently until 1840 when it was replaced by what is now City Hall Square (. This building burned down in 1888). A second school building was erected onState Road 2 north of Canal Rd.; this building also served intermittently until 1840 when it too was replaced by what is now City Hall Square (. This building also burned down in 1888). A third school building erected onState Road 2 just south of Canal Rd.; this building also served intermittently until 1840 when it too was replaced by what is nowCity Hall Square (). A fourth schoolbuilding erected onCanal Rd.; this building also served intermittently until 1840 when it too was replaced by what is nowCity Hall Square (). A fifth schoolbuilding erected onMain St.. It did not serve any purpose(). A sixth child’s public school opened under auspices of “The Children’s Friend society” northeast corner Pleasant St.–now First Ave.–east side Market St.–now Third Ave.– southeast corner Washington Ave.–now Fourth Ave.—on lot donated by Geo Wills – bounded NW cor Schaffer &NW 3rd Av.–Now 5th Av–(This structure no longer stands.) . After these schools closed there were only 7 pupils enrolled grades 1-8 out of a total enrolling population over 9200 students who attended public schools across central OH through nine different Boards during his four terms!
