Middletown is located in northwestern Ohio on the border of Summit and Medina counties. The name "Middletown" was given to it by General David Dixon in 1814 when he surveyed the area for his new military post as part of the Northwest Territory under Ulysses S. Grant's division of United States territory east of the Allegheny Mountains. The first European settlers were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1795 and named their settlement "Montréal." They built a log cabin on an island in Lake Erie near where Middletown now stands and made some initial sales and exchanges with local Indians. In 1800 they founded what became today's Middletown after purchasing land from the Delaware nation east of present-day Cleveland. By 1802 they had erected a frame courthouse and tavern which served as their alternate capital during times when Fort Pitt was closed due to financial stress brought on by war with Spain In 1812 General David Dixon surveyor general for Northwest Territory recommended that Springfield be selected as the permanent site for Ulysses S. Grant's new Military District including both Summit and Medina Counties which then included all or part of Lawrence County Dixon reached Springfield on July 12, 1814 during his third reconnaissance tour across northern Ohio following his march from Detroit through Canada two months earlier - this time accompanying Commodore James K., Jr.'s squadron along with Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer's division covered by Major John Doolittle’s Wingate’s Flight Crossing over into present-day Cuyahoga Valley via Monongahela River valley he found rich rolling country intersected here by small streams; village sites consisting only of earth huts were being established hereabouts by refugees from settlements westward along Great Lakes (see map reproduced below). He named this place "Dixonville" after himself but no such entity ever grew up there The first store opened at this location on January 3, 1830 . That year also saw first settler purchase Lots #1 & 2 (now blocks bordered NW corner Lot 9) NNW corner 4th Ave & Dearborn St; lot 5 NW corner Elm St also purchased about 1840 After surveying most parts lying beyond limits proposed for present day Stark Township within boundaries laid out for future township adjoining him he directed Surveyor Robert Ewing to plat said township taking lots therein bounded On W side meridian line w/ stake& terre rock summit running thence ESE & joining dots 1/2 mile apart thence To SW corners First Ave & Elm Streets forming triangular open space bounded across NE quadrant thereof by 4TH Ave continuance thereof until reaching SSW Corner defined above describedsurrounding Lots sold aforesaid All lots except one situated @ latitude 29° 03’N longitude 74° 20’W which lies within bounds laid out for future Stark Township are hereby incorporated hereinwithinto said Township . In 1836 James A.'s wife Ann gave birth to their first child, also named James A.: Ann Maud Paulding (1813–1887). James A., Jr.'s brother David J.Paulding ran the business from 1830 until 1840 when he became ill and died; afterwards it passed through various families before being sold to G W Kapp in 1865 who made it their headquarters for many years before selling it again in 1898 to H L Sibley who retained it until 1932 when it was donated to Columbiana County by J B Goudreau III as part of a local historical district nomination In 1916 Middletown had its own water system which served all of Columbiana County; this system was replaced by Ohio Edison’s electric service in 1930 In 1932 Middletown became home to one of two world’s first air conditioning pioneer plants – GEICO’s plant #1 – operations began here on May 15th 1933 Middletown has experienced several waves of growth since then including an influx of high-tech workers during the late 1990s/2000s IT boom while also experiencing a resurgence in retail activity throughout recent years .
