Middletown is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Athens County. The population was 25,071 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Athens County after Athens and Miamisburg. Middletown was founded by planters who arrived from Maryland in 1825. The first post office opened in 1829. The city was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1907, and became a town on December 12, 1916. Middletown is located within the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area and is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Zanesville Combined Statistical Area. The early settlers of this region were farmers who grew corn, beans, squash, potatoes and other crops along with tobacco and hogs onto which they added later increased quantities of salt pork or bacon for export to Europe. By 1830 there were over 120 families living hereabouts; by 1840 there were 350 homes with an average size of 3½ feet (100 cm) by 2½ feet (70 cm). In 1850 about one-third of all families in Perry Township lived hereabouts; but by 1860 only about 10% did so still; while during the Civil War less than 5% resided hereabouts—-the vast majority living either east or west of this township line—-by 1865 even these few had largely been replaced by Germans or Irish immigrants from central Pennsylvania whence they came to work on beet sugar plantations near Dayton in search of better lives than those back home where wages varied widely according to productivity levels among menial tasks such as picking cotton or shoveling coal off loading docks—a life that increasingly resembled servitude rather than freedom! This gradual withdrawal from rural communities across eastern Ohio resulted not only from technological advances (railroads brought new markets for goods) but also social ones: women lost their independence; children no longer learned Farming skills useful for earning their own bread; men left agriculture to enter service instead leading more stabilized lives outside agriculture altogether becoming “manufacturing” workers rather than self-sufficient farmers like their forebears had done! This process accelerated when internal combustion engines became available starting around 1900 turning what had once been plow country into rolling farmland now carpeted with houses! Middletown is a small town in the hills of northeastern Ohio, United States. The population was 3,622 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Middletown was given to the area by General David Dixon during the War of 1812. Dixon named every village and town in Dayton after military generals who had led British and American forces against each other that year. Middletown was founded on October 15, 1814 by Solomon Miles and three others as a post office under the name of Scioto Township No. 2 [1]. On February 14, 1865, it became one of seventeen townships included in the newly created Dayton–Middletown Township (consolidated with Franklin Township on November 1). In 1892, when Dayton became an independent city, Middletown annexed parts of Franklin Township east of I-75 and west of US-290 to form its new city boundary. The first settler in Middletown was Abram Dexter who arrived there from Bedford County in 1798 or 1800 [2]. He built a log cabin near what is now Park Avenue on land which he donated to the government for use as a military hospital during the war with Britain [3]. When peace returned after two years of fighting, Dexter sold his land back to Abram Dexter Jr., but continued to live there until his death in 1810 [4]. In 1814, Solomon Miles established a post office at Middletown (then Scioto) township due to concerns about transportation times between Columbus and Philadelphia via riverboats [5], which were then still very slow[6]
Middletown was founded in 1795 by the brothers John and Peter Middletown. The town became a center of learning for young people in the region and developed into a small but important community. In 1814, Middletown was renamed Xenia after actress Sarah Siddons.
