The town was founded in 1824 by the exchange of goods between the Indians and pioneer farmers. Shooting has been a part of the community since its inception. In 1896, Julius Burdick set up his shooting range in what is now the Burdick Park Shopping Center. This location became known as "The Hole in the Wall" because it was one of the few places where people could shoot without fear of getting into trouble with local law enforcement or other shooters. One of Middletown's most famous shooters was Jerry Moran who won two U.S. Championships at age 17 and 19 years old (1936 and 1938). Moran also set numerous world records for single shot rifle shooting at distances up to 350 yards (269 meters). He died in 1978 at the age of 82 years old after a long career as a shooter in which he held more than 50 international titles including 20 Master Rifle World Championships

Middletown was founded as an agricultural community in 1811 by George Washington Carver, Sr., who purchased land near what is now downtown Middletown from Joshua Drake for $5 per acre ($ Today it would be much more). In 1815, Carver donated another piece of land – this time around what is now First Baptist Church – which led to its current name: Middletown Township. In 1824 he also donated land for a public square; today known as Carver Square, it remains one of town's most prominent landmarks. In 1837 Middletown became part of Chillicothe when that community was merged into Tiffin Township; however, because Chillicothe had larger boundaries than MiddletOWN did at that time (it included parts of modern Kenton and Price counties), during annexation efforts conducted in 1840-41 less than half of all residents within Tiffin Borough chose to become residents within MiddLETOWN township instead - leaving much of what currently makes up central Tiffin (including parts including present day Newport Heights) unincorporated until after 1860 when services were provided by employees employed by both townships combined under one administration at Central School House on Main Street between Delaware Avenue and State Route 727 just outside town limits (' newly annexed' portions 'of'township boundaries since then'). The first settler arrive hereabouts date back over 100 years ago!
