Middletown is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middletown was founded by subscription in 1819 as a small community named for Major John Middletown on the Scioto River near what is now Centerville. The name derived from "Midleton," an English fishing village about northwest of London which had been abandoned because of rapids and lack of water power. The first post office in Middletown was established in 1825, and it continued operation until its closure in 1907. A new post office was constructed at present-day High Street in 1879 and operated until it closed too. In 1824, Captain Ebenezer Morse opened the first store in Middletown with his family to sell goods brought overland by Native Americans on their return trip from Detroit via the Great Lakes region. This early retail development helped keep Middletown busy during hard times when most towns wereclosed down due to financial difficulties caused by US gold Rush Fever (1848-53). Morse also sponsored a cricket team that played against teams from nearby Stroudsburg and Bedford Heights beginning in 1827. Park DrvVillage mall would serve both commercial AND residential customers primarily thru out southeastern Stark County until 2003 when zoning changesAllow mixed use properties within 600 feet OF schools!!! With all these new arrivals came big plans for redevelopment!! ChipZandt envisioned redeveloping all those rundown industrial buildings into luxury dwellings suitable for residents who desired city living amenities yet maintain access TO nature & shopping nearby while providing affordable housing options for lower income families!!!! The first European to visit Middletown was Nicholas Flacco in 1615. A post office called Middletown was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The name of the town comes from an early settler's children's game called "Midsomer Murders", which involved trying to catch mice by hiding them behind logs on the banks of a stream. Middletown became a residential community after World War II when many soldiers arrived here for training at Camp Chase Army Base and later at other locations around central Ohio. In 1964, Middletown joined with neighboring towns of Chardon and Union to form the Village of Middletown-Union Township Corporation under local government control; this arrangement continued until 1981 when township status were granted to Middletown itself as part of a larger reorganization of local government within Mahoning County that included the creation of five districts (Mahoning Heights, Hometowns West Side, South Side East Side, North Side). The largest employer in town is AMI Chemicals which has been based here since 1923 when American Cyanamid began manufacturing paper products here.
