It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Zanesville, OH-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middletown is located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River and is bordered by Akron to the south, Mentor to the west, and Delaware to the north. Middletown was founded in 1814 as a farmstead called "Canton." In 1825 it became a town under charter from Ohio Governor Robert E. Lee. The original courthouse was destroyed in a fire in 1851 but replaced with a new one which still stands today. The village of Middletown had its first election in 1865 and became an incorporated municipality in 1908. In 1916 Middletown voters passed an ordinance creating Lakewood Township which included most of what now makes up MiddletOWN except for a tiny piece that would later be annexed by Akron into their city limits (the annexed land includes some of the many boulevards that make up Dayton). It’s hard not to feel at home when exploring this picturesque little community nestled on top of hills overlooking downtown Cleveland on either side of Michigan Avenue just east of Euclid Road/Route 671/Upper Arlington Boulevard (just south of I-675) or while driving down Main Street past Shaker Heights Elementary School or Stiles Middle School – all streets that are named after trees planted by early settlers: “Oakland” (now Euclid), “Hickory” (now Mentor), “Willow” (now Zanesville), etc., until you reach Old Middletown Cemetery off Springboro Road just northeast corner Lakewood Boulevard/Route 671 where you will find more than 400 graves dating back to 1792 including those belonging to dignitaries such as Ulysses S. Grant, James Kossuth and others who were buried there during our years as part of Hamilton Township! Just beyond lays another gem – Elmira College / Hocking University – both excellent private universities ranked among America’s best according to recent studies! Finally we have several shopping areas close at hand including Oakbrook mall right near downtown Cleveland across Route 905 from IKEA before turning left onto State Routes 422nd Street heading southeast towards Strongsville; Westlake mall just outside city limits minutes away on Eastbound I-440; while Phinney Ridge Mall offers much needed chain commercial enterprise within walking distance along Interstate 468 making it an ideal spot for weekend shoppers notwithstanding long lines at local Department stores like Sears & JCPenney locations throughout southwestern Ohio PLUS scores OF other specialty shops and services found only here IN AMERICA!!!

Middletown was founded on July 6, 1814 by James Middletown and his wife Lucy as a trading post on the Scioto River between Chillicothe and Cincinnati. In 1821, Middletown became a full-fledged village when it annexed the adjacent town of Delaware. The current community was established in 1868 when parts of Delaware were combined with Middletown to form what is nowHamilton Township. On July 1, 1907, Hamilton Township split into two separate townships: one including all of present-day MiddletOWN except for an enclave on Clinton Avenue in Grandview Heights that continues to be municipally owned and run as a separate entity – Today’s Clinton Township forms most of the eastern border of that original township while much older portions (eastern portion including Old Fort Harrison) are located within unincorporated Hamilton Township proper which forms most or all of today's MiddletOWN
