Middletown is a town in Will County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Springfield–Middletown metropolitan area. Middletown has been called the "Gateway to the Great Lakes" because it is on the main route between Cincinnati and Detroit. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Middletown were Quakers who arrived in 1795 from Pennsylvania. They built a log cabin on the current site of Main Street and named it Middletown after their home town of Middleton, England. In 1812, they founded an academy there to educate young Native Americans and teach them English. The Academy continued operation until 1907 when it merged with another school to form Wright Institute School District No. 1 which still operates as Middletown Academy today. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne fought at Fallen Timbers near present-day Springfield Township while Cincinnatus Ross led forces against Tecumseh's Indiansobjecting to Ulysses S. Grant's decision not to annex Ohio into the Union before his inauguration as president that year1 In 1827, Captain John Greenblatt established a trading post at Middletown after finding gold along the Scioto River2 In 1830s two brothers named John and James Dickson created a small farming community around what is now Broad Ripple Road3 On December 16th, 1830 Anthon Wrayer (1787-1866) settled in what later became known as Middletown Township4 He was one of several early patentees of Ohio Territory5 For many years he served as justice of peace for Wilcox township6 Wrayer had earlier located significant amounts of gold along the Scioto River7 Middlesex Company Store opened in 18509 The first regular settler in this area was Isaac Hill10 By 1860 there were over 100 residents11 during 1861-1870 Indian Wars due to skirmishes between American Indian fighters and 6 militia companies commanded by Colonel George Armstrong13 There were also raids by raiders such as Black Hawk who took large quantities of goods from local farmers14 In 1863 Major Alpheus Potter organized a company from Hancock county15A store fire destroyed most buildings in 186516 but new businesses quickly sprang up including A & P grocery store (later Alfred Poots)17A post office was established at MiddletOWN on November 15th 187218 renamed Williamsburg19 After Williamsburg correspondence ceased being sent through Illinois mail carrier William Fenton20a stagecoach depot wagon stop was established east off Broad Ripple Rd21 Between 1870-1920 about 130 house Lots were developed around Bridgeport Rd22 The last resident left then building began falling apart23 Between 1920-1990 only 8 memory bricks remain24 In 1990 an effort started by citizens restoration project25 More than $250K has been spent so far
Middletown was founded in 1795 by Captain George Washington and his associates as a port on the Monongahela River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1801 it had become the largest settlement in Northwest Ohio. Middletown became an important transportation center, and its merchants developed a strong trade with other settlements in the region. In addition to its commercial activity, Middletown also developed into a manufacturing center for goods produced in the area such as cloth, shoes, cigars, and boots. By 1860, Middletown had reached its peak as an agricultural community and had become one of the most populous towns in Northwest Ohio. However, during the late 19th century economic decline led to contraction of local businesses and population growth rates began to diminish. In 1920 Middletown lost its municipal charter but continued to function as a rural municipality pending annexation by Warren Township.
