Middletown is a small town in Wood County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus-Middletown-Wilmington, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Middletown is derived from "mound" or "hillock," meaning an elevation above the lowlands. The first settler in what would become Middletown was David Wilkinson in 1813. Wilkinson and his family were among the first to come to Ohio after the American Revolutionary War. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Wilkinson's Station. In 1815, he married Susanna Newcomer and settled down in what became Middletown Township with their six children: Josephine (1816-96), John (1819-92), David (1821-91), Sarah (1824-93), Martha Jane (1827-84) and Ebenezer (1829-) . In 1837, Christopher Beardsley bought land near present day Middletown for $5 per acre . Beardsley developed a small farmstead which he called "Beardsley's Corner." He also started a school that year which served as the nucleus of today's school district. On November 3, 1838, voters in township recorded their choice for township president by voting on whether to elect one man or three women - Mary Lathrop Hargrave of Wilmottsville; Anna Cushing ofDefiance; and Lydia Biddle of Duncansboro - as trustees for four years renewable at will . On January 1st 1840 these trustees were elected with Anna Cushing as head trustee/president until her death on December 2nd 1840; then Lydia Biddle took over until her death on March 7th 1845; final election being held April 6th 1850 when Josephine Hargrave won election as head trustee/president effective immediately The following year saw further development with the opening of Griggs & Co.(now known as Youngstown Chocolates) on May 22nd 1851 by Elijah Griggs who had purchased portions of earlier pioneer store owner Andrew Greggs land along Dayton Road between High Street and East Market Street . This location would be home to one of Youngstown’s earliest mills dating back to 1785 when John Glover founded mills heretofore unknown ..... In 1861 Prentice Manufacturing Company opened up shop just north of Griggs & Co., later becoming Wacker Chemical Company ..... By 1870 there were 14 businesses located within Middletown limits including gristmillinery(Wacker Chemical Company closed 1905), bakery(Ezekiel Haight opened 1865 closed 1889), cigar store(Fenton Cigar Store opened 1911 closed 1923). .... There are few remaining reminders from those early days such as gristmillinery still standing behind current day Sprague Elementary School across Dayton Rd from where it once stood ..... Noteworthy residents during this time include Elijah Griggs Sr., Andrew Greggs Jr., Joby Williamson Painter (later Mayor 1965–1972 ), Clara Barton , James Weldon Johnson , Elmer Gantry US Congressman 1912 – 1928 .... timber cutting also played an important role during this time with many local mill owners responsible for helping build roads, bridges and other infrastructure necessary for efficient economic growth ...... Today little remains but several historic buildings dating back to c 1830 remain vacant inside city limits while much has been replaced like Sprague Elementary School ................. According to 2000 census data approximately 60%of all resident taxpayers lived in unincorporated Wood County .......... Most notable organizations associated with MiddletOWN during this time include Citizens PAC Committee formed 1945 ; First Methodist Church erected 1907 ; Friends Meeting House erected 1903
