Middletown is a small town in the southern portion of Ohio, located on the Middletown-Newcastle line. The population was 1,654 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a simple log cabin settlement called "Killeen" on July 12, 1796 by Danish Immigrants Rasmus Killeen and his wife Anne Marie LaFontaine. They named their new settlement after their old home in Shotts County, New York, which they had visited while on their honeymoon. The original log cabin was destroyed by a storm in 1802 but was rebuilt nearby with logs from an old millwheel located upstream on the Delaware River. The community name evolved to Middletown due to its location between two major settlements— Dayton and Youngstown—on one side of the river and Mifflin Heights on the other side. By 1811, when it became organized as a township, Middletown had about 100 residents and six stores. In 1830 it had grown to over 300 residents and 10 stores; by 1840 it had increased to more than 500 residents and 20 stores; and by 1850 it numbered more than 700 residents and 30 stores. A school was established in 1825 at what is now First Presbyterian Church (now known as Washington United Methodist). In 1830–31 there were also three churches: First Presbyterian (later renamed Mount Zion), Second Presbyterian (later renamed Unitarian), and Episcopal (later renamed White Street Baptist). Middletown experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following American Civil War because of its strategic location midway between two key Union army camps for supply purposes: Fort Sumter on the north bank ofriver near Cincinnati and Camp Chase farther downriver at Vandalia Junction near Toledo. Not only did Middletown provide ample opportunity for commerce but also many manufacturing opportunities including wagonmaking, leatherworking, foundry work, clothing manufacturing, bakery work, printing press production etc., which led to heavy industrial development throughout what are now neighboring communities in Southern Ohio during this time period – something that would not be repeated until after World War II when massive suburban sprawl developed around major cities across America resumed growth patterns not seen before then
Middletown was founded on November 15, 1795 by Nicholas Middletown and his wife Deborah. It was named for the town of Milford in Connecticut. The first post office in Middletown was established on December 1, 1812. In 1825, Middletown became a village and was incorporated as a city on October 25, 1867. The population of Middletown reached 4,000 by 1890. On July 3, 1907 the city added Utopia Township to its boundaries; the township had been formed from part of Scioto Township. On February 20, 1915 the city annexed part of Xenia Township to its boundaries; Xenia had been created from parts of Scioto and Uniontownships.
