Middletown, Ohio is a small town located in the southern part of the United States. The population was 4,924 at the 2010 census. Middletown was founded in 1798 and became a city in 1907. The name "Middletown" comes from the word "midsummer" which means between June and August in English. Middletown is located on the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, about 20 miles west of Pittsburgh and 50 miles east of Cleveland. The first Europeans to visit Middletown were French traders and missionaries who arrived here in 1798 for trade with Native Americans. In 1802, John Armstrong founded what would become Armstrong Tire & Rubber Company on Main Street. By 1825, Armstrong had built three brick buildings on his lot today's Heaton Avenue block that housed his company offices until 1911 when they were replaced by two more structures – one still standing and one demolished – that now house the Township Hall Museum (opened October 1, 2009). In 1907, when Pittsburgh annexed Middletown as its own municipality, it made room for another large town within its boundaries by moving Westmoreland County's largest county seat from Greensburg to Middletown. At that time there were only 2,000 residents living in Westmoreland County; by 1913 there were over 30,000 people living in Pittsburg alone! Today's City of MiddletOWN contains over 60% of all residents within its limits! In 1931-1932 Morrell Paper Products Company moved their manufacturing facilities from Greenville to Manchester because of Prohibition rates being too high for Greenville to compete with suppliers outside of Ohio. In early 1933 MorrellPaperProductsCompany discontinued operations due to economic hard times but left behind a legacy that continues today as Morrell Paper Products Co-op (now known as PNC Bank) which manufactures paper products such as envelopes and checkbooks online since 1988 Today’s Mount Pleasant Shopping Center / Gateway Mall complex houses several independently owned businesses including JCPenney(1999), Sears(2005), Macy’s(2006) along with numerous smaller stores housing nearly every type of store you could hope for including farm/ ranch/ sporting goods retailers as well as departmental stores like Kmart (1994), Ross (1998), Home Depot(2002) along with many other anchor tenants
