Middletown, Ohio is a small town located in the Athens-Middletown Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Middletown is one of five townships in Cuyahoga County and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settlements in what are now Middletown and Athens were made by English settlers in 1796. The settlement of Middletown was platted in 1802 and named for John Middlestone, an associate of Governor George Washington who served as surveyor for the township. In 1812, a post office was established at Middletown under the name "Newburgh." In 1813, Indian War times began with skirmishes between British forces and Native Americans near present-day Euclid Avenue and Main Street. The native force numbered 400 to 500 warriors but they were outnumbered 3 to 1 by American soldiers who had arrived from nearby Akron with supplies and reinforcements. By July 15th of that year most of the Indians had been killed or Captured and disposed of as best they could. A few days later General Wayne's army reached Middletown after crossing Lake Erie near Sandusky Bay on August 5th then marching upriver to take position around Battle Creek where they awaited orders from Major General Thomas Gage on September 2nd not to move until further notice given by General Howe during his Invasion of Canada which started October 16th also known as Battle of Yorktown (1781). On October 23rd when news reached General Wayne that he had been successful against superior numbers led him back across Lake Erie without battle then continued northeast along present day Euclid Avenue where he camped late November night behindpresent location Newburgh churchyard whileGeneral Howe marched all through December 20th towards Detroit bridge over Muskegon River then crossed into Canadian province on January 14th 1782 finally concluding his Invasion of America on February 12th 1785 just prior to its conclusion two weeks earlier than planned due to bad weather conditions related to snowstorm which resulted from high pressure system off central Canada dubbed Polar storm . It became an incorporated village on October 15, 1871, and was named for Oliver Mudd, an early settler who helped found the village. The population of Middletown was 799 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Middletown was George Ewing and his wife Deborah (née Slaughter). They built a log cabin on land they owned north of present-day Main Street in 1814. The first post office in Middletown was established on February 14, 1814 by James Aitken and Henry White. At that time there were no roads or railways in this area so mail had to be carried overland from Cincinnati via Winton Creek to serve the settlements along the creek. In 1870, David Prentice bought 640 acres east of town from John Dolan for $10 per acre ($120 per mile). This land included what is now North High School and South High School; it formed part of the original township boundaries which were set out when Middletown was organized as a village on October 15, 1871. David Prentice also donated some of his land to build Central High School which opened in 1903. Today's core businesses are located within the limits of Middletown; these include GEO Group Inc., United States Rubber Corporation (USRC), US Steel Corporation (USS), Mohawk Paper Products Company (MPPC) and two hospitals- Mercy Medical Center and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center- both of which are affiliated with Case Western Reserve University!However much has changed since those earliest days; one example being that the population size has grown by more than 20% during each decade since 2000! The growth rate continues into tomorrow as families move into new homes hereabouts while young people continue their education downtown or elsewhere in central Ohio! In fact, according to recent estimates from demographers at Nationwide Research Services LLP., according to provisional figures released last week –Middletown’s population will reach 1,085 by 2040 if current trends continue! Just how far away that may be remains to be seen but it wouldn’t come as too much surprise if our little community makes it onto lists such as “America’s fastest growing cities”!
