The new municipality had a population of 7,000 people and grew rapidly due to business opportunities created by its location between Cincinnati and Cleveland on the Great Lakes region's major trade routes. In 1830, when construction began on what would become downtown Middletown, locals donated four lots adjacent to each other for use as public square; this area remains today one of town's most popular attractions with shoppers browsing its nearly 150 merchant businesses along 2 blocks (2000 ft) wide main thoroughfare called Broadway (later renamed State Street). In addition to its commercial advantages - including access to railroad lines which allowed it to grow quickly - Middletown also boasted excellent educational opportunities thanks to donations from local citizens including prominent teachers such as Nicholas Biddle (1796-1868), John Crayton (1819-1875), Elijah Howe Richardson (1826-1900), Alfred Weiser (1829-1920) and Moses Wheeler (1800-1885). During the mid 19th century Middletowners experienced rapid growth due not only to their own efforts but also those emanating from nearby cities such as Cincinnati/Cleveland and Pittsburgh/Chesterfield which saw significant waves of immigrants coming through their gates seeking work or education opportunities in these burgeoning industrial areas during this period known commonly as "the American Century." At first glance it may have seemed that life couldn't get any better for these newcomers but unfortunately there were many negative consequences ensuing from this influx including social unrestrained by traditional values which often led localized gangs operating within communities until well into the 20th century inclusive some still extant today consisting primarily young men from rural backgrounds lured away from safe havens like high school where they developed strong work ethic skills essential for success gridlock type neighborhoods started forming all across America characterized variously as " Polish Sides," Ukrainian Ghettoes" or simply Slum Towns while native born white American citizens increasingly resorted increasingly becoming self reliantopezoning policies enacted during prohibition Era leading eventually large scale unemployment among recently arrivals resultantly criminals attracted thereto making streetwalker lifestyles more profitable than ever before ultimately leading directly toward largescale inner city ghettoization witnessed nationally during late 20th century snapshot Middlesex Township: A map showing township boundaries It should be noted that there are no township boundaries listed here reflecting Township being formed circa 1800s conforms mostly with present day union county limits
