Middletown is located on the border of Greene and Warren counties. It is bordered by Athens County to the east, Muskingum County to the north, and Price Township to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Middletown was James Hinton in 1811. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 27A about two miles northeast of present-day Middletown. In 1814, Hinton married Sarah Morse and together they founded what would become Middletown's first store, which operated for several years from a log building across from where Main Street now stands. In 1827, territorial surveyor George Washington Dixon surveyed land that included present-day Middletown and laid out gridiron streets that are still in use today. By 1830, there were only five houses in town; however, by 1840 there were over 100 residents living hereabouts due to new arrivals from all over America who had come to escapethe Great Depression of 1929-1930%. Many early settlers came through Middletown on their way eastward during the days when there was no railroads connecting Cincinnati with Toledo or Detroit; they stopped at this local station on their way southward as well as at other stops along their route before continuing onward into Indiana Territory (now Michigan). One such individual was Joshua Whitehead who arrived November 12th, 1800 with his family consisting of three children: Joshua (1801–1881), Sarah (1799–1864), Hannah (1798–1868).
