This business produced some of the most advanced firearms of its time including the Garand rifle and Springfield carbine. Middletown became an important center of American arms production during World War II as a result of its close proximity to DuPont munitions plants located within easy reach of both war-related industries and potential allies such as Canada and England. After the war ended, Middletown continued to prosper as a center for gun manufacturing until declining sales caused it to file for bankruptcy in 1978

It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Miamisburg, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Middletown derived from its location on the Scioto River which ran through it. Settlers first arrived in what is now Middletown in 1814. In 1835, James S. Phelps purchased land near present-day Middletown and founded Phelps Manufacturing Company which became one of America's leading manufacturers of printing presses and other equipment for papermaking plants. Middletown's economy shifted to manufacturing when electric power became available during World War II and then again after the technology replaced gasolinepowered engines in industry. By 1991, however, manufacturing had all but disappeared from Middletown's economy as a result of falling commodity prices and competition from foreign manufacturers who offer lower prices for their products than American companies do. Today, much of what once made Middletown a thriving industrial community has been replaced by more traditional businesses such as restaurants and small retailers that are based on local traditions or specialized skills like quilting or cake decorating that have remained unchanged for centuries.
