In 1825, David Hendrickson acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day MiddletOWN from Colonel Solomon Hull for $10 per acre ($240 per hectare today). This became what is now called East Liberty Hill which contains many old homes dating back to the early 1800s including Oneida Hall; Redeemer Chapel; First Presbyterian Church; and Christ Episcopal Cathedral. In 1830 Drury erected his fine Gothic Revival styled mansion on this tract known as "Hendrickson's Hill". It housed both male and female inmates with indoor plumbing until 1955 when it was closed down because of cost overruns associated with prison construction projects at that time throughout Ohio state prisons system! A plaque commemorates this event located outside DRury's Mansion entrance reads: "David Hendrickson - Father Of Our Prison System" A number of other notable residents lived here during these years such as Judge Isaac Cuyahoga (1796-1868), Mayor Andrew Johnson (1827-1829), Judge Simon Cameron (1798-1864)and Congressman Elijah Cummings (born c 1840). However most people here continued farming until after World War II when industry began coming into play with more jobs being available outside of prison setting up businesses like George Jones Chevrolet dealership & Sheet Metal Shop across Center Street from Pioneer Courthouse Square circa 1945 thru 1990 etcetera muddling along through various waves of change always seeking stability or familiarity never lasting long especially within our own communities going through similar upheavals day by day often unnoticed or unheralded yet constantly shaping our daily lives
