Barnes also preached here during this time period before becoming pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Dayton later that year. In 1907, Mrs. Charles Witherspoon gave her home on Maple Road to be used as a library open to all residents of Middleburg Heights and it remains one of town's most popular attractions today! In 1850, George Washington Stephenson donated land along Scioto River for what would become Middleburg Heights Cemetery; construction began soon after and completed in 1851-52 under guidance of General James Kinsman (cousin of Colonel James Knox Kinsman). Many notable citizens are buried there including: Ulysses S Grant (1841-1916), Gouverneur Morris (1777-1865), Andrew Johnson (1808-1865), Winfield Scott Hancock (1795-1882), James Buchanan Polk (1845-1912) & Zachary Taylor (1784-1850). A portion of campus comprising old High School now houses Healthy Living Center which opened in fall 2009 with national acclaim! The community was founded by John Middleburgh and his wife Sarah in 1824 as a small farming village on the edge of the present-day city of Akron. By 1830, it had developed into a small town with a school and two churches. In 1836, Middleburgh Heights became part of the new township of Defiance and its name changed to Middleburg Heights again in 1851 when that township was merged into Mahoning County. In 1903, Midhght Heights incorporated as a village and adopted its current name. The community experienced economic decline during the late 20th century due to automation and other factors; however, recent growth has driven revitalization efforts.
