Middleburg Heights, Ohio is a town inersited within the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area and is located about 9 miles east of downtown Akron. The population was 17,362 at the 2010 census. Middleburg Heights is part of Summit County. The Town of Middleburg Heights was formed on December 15, 1871 from parts of the Town of Springville. The original plat for Middleburg Heights shows that it would be bordered by Masonic Road to the south and east, Hubbard Avenue to the north, Clinton Street to the west and State Route 29 (now Interstate 77) to the northwest. According to John Cavanaugh's History of Summit County 1821-1875, "In 1820 a group of men who had come overland from Indiana as traders founded what became Middleburgh Heights." In 1851 an act was passed by General Assembly which renamed all townships in Summit County after military generals or officers who had served during the War Of 1812 or later: Battle Creek Township (later Westlake Village), Mayfield Township (later North Union Township), East Liverpool Township (later East Strongsville Township), Perrysburg Township (later Defiance Borough), New Castle Township (later Centerville Borough), Akron City Center Municipal District No. 4 (now University Circle Shopping Centre), Highland Park Municipal District No. 2 and South Side Community Development Agency No., making Middleburgh Heights one of only six communities in Summit County that were not named after prior settler families! According to history books such as One Hundred Years Ago: A History Of Akron And Its Vicinity by George Dennison and Henry B Breach, “The first white man known to have set foot on this site [of present-day Middleburg Heights] was Andrew Greenough who journeyed overland from western Massachusetts in 1788” He likely landed near what is now Hubbard Avenue because he purchased 8 rods of land there for $10 just before his death in January 1800 from natural causes at age 43 years old! Andrew Greenough may have been among those early settlers who platted out what would become Middleburgh Heights; however, it wasn't until 1830 when Elijah Howe set up shop hereabouts with his family that activity really began picking up around here! Elijah Howe ran a general store/market on Clinton Street for many years before moving downriver into nearby Canfield Lake where he developed some valuable real estate holdings! It wasn't until 1850 when another early settler named Abram pronounced himself able “the Great & Majestic Abram” that things really got started around here – nothing could keep him away from these woods anymore long enough for him to actually build anything! Abram bought 320 acres surrounding today's eastern edge of town which included much property along Hubbard Ave including 3 homes still standing today dating back To pre-Civil War days when this area was part of direct Indian Country!!! One can only imagine how Abram must've felt upon finally owning something worthwhile outside settlements populated primarily by Native Americans??? By 1870 there were already several businesses active in what would become present day MiddleBURGH HEIGHTS: Mr Fenton's dry goods store / bakery on Clinton St., Mrs Higginson’s millinery store on High St., Mrs Jarrell’s feed store opposite Masonic Rd., Dr Witherspoon’s physician office building on Neil St., and Mr Goode’s grocery store opposite State Route 29!! All have since gone out OF BUSINESS although various portions remain extant including Mr Goode’s brick building currently used as apartments!!! Isolated though it may have been at first glance due largely to its location within Indian Territory (!),Middleburgh Heights quickly emerged as an important center for commerce & culture due both to its strategic location within easy reachof many major city centers (& their respective services) as well as its excellent schools system which spawned some wealthiest & most influential citizens amongst its residents throughout our earliest days!!! Over time thru hard work & dedication by numerous individuals responsible FOR OUR COMMUNITY TODAY - regardless ETHNICALLY OR RELIGIOUSLY - MIDDLEBURGH HEIGHTS has managed TO SURVIVE THE FLOODS OF THE Sixties, Seventies AND EIGHTEEN YEARS+ ??? Some folks say THAT WE ARE THE LAST AMERICAN CITIZENS IN CENTER CITY OHIO - BUT I SAY THAT MAYBE MY GREATgrandfather DID REALLY SETTL HERE BACK IN 1795 ??? So What Really Happened In Those Mighty Eighteen Hundred Years??? We just might know...

Middleburg Heights was a small town in Summit County, Ohio, until the early 19th century. It was located on the east bank of the Scioto River, about 12 miles north of Cleveland. The town began as a small farming community, and by 1814 it had a population of about 100 people. In 1868, Middleburg Heights became part of the new city of Cleveland. The construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 led to increased traffic on the Scioto River and tothe development of mills and other industrial facilities in middle-class neighborhoods along the riverbank. These developments made Middleburg Heights one of the most prosperous towns in Summit County during its early years. However, when Cleveland developed its own economy in the late 19th century, economic interests shifted away from agriculture and towards manufacturing. This change caused Middleburg Heights to suffer greatly during this period; its population decreased from 1,000 to just 200 by 1900. However, after World War IIumberhoods grew up around industries such as steelmaking and auto manufacturing, and they regained much of their former prosperity. Today Middleburg Heights is an agricultural community with a few large factories leftlying among its farmssteads.
Middleburg Heights was once part of the township of Bedford. It was annexed by Middleburg Township in 1836, and then by Findlay Township in 1849. In 1870, it became a part of the newly formed Lucas County. The population increased rapidly from its initial population of only fifty-six in 1800 to two thousand by 1830. The first settler in Middleburg Heights was John Saginaw who arrived around 1800. He built his home on what is now North Main Street. By 1830, there were twenty-four homes in Middleburg Heights, all with their own land grant or lot patent. The early days of Middlebury Heights were very difficult and rough for the settlers because they had to fight off Native Americans who were constantly raiding their villages and farms. But eventually they managed to build a strong community that survived through many challenges.
