After American independence was won, Congress passed an act naming Middleburgh Heights for George Washington (who had died in office three years earlier). As per law at that time, only citizens who had resided there for one year could be given this honorific title. However, because many people were living on-and-off in Middleburgh Heights since its inception, George Washington's namesake title eventually went out-of-use and reverted back to its original name: Middleburgh Heights when it became an incorporated town again.
