The area now known as Middleburg Heights was once part of the much larger village of Middleburg on the Scioto River. When it was annexed by Dayton in 1875, many of its people followed to become citizens of Dayton. Most of those who still lived there in 1875 moved to what is now eastside Middleburg Heights when that area became sectioned off from downtown Dayton for business and residential development. The original name for this new settlement was "Greene's Mills". It has been variously called "Upper Middleburg", "Greene's Mills", and finally "Middleburg Heights" since its incorporation into Dayton. One reason why Upper Middleburgh may have been chosen as the name for this new community instead of Greene's Mills may have been because Upper Middleburgh had a more prominent citizen figure than either Greene or Lower Middleburgh did. Colonel William Covington (1792-1868) served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1855 to 1861, and he also helped found both Upper and Lower Middleburgh with his friend Jameson Locke Ray (1800-1860). Other important early residents include Jens Kappeler (1804-1895), who built the first store in what is now midtown Dayton; Drury Wistar (1814-1900); and George Fenton (1789-1863), who founded one of the first hotels in town. In 1905, when President Theodore Roosevelt visited Dayton during his annual fact finding tour, he stayed at Griggs' Hotel on Third Street which was then located on what is now eastside Middleburg Heights Avenue. Some historians believe that President Roosevelt may have had a hand in choosing that particular name for what would eventually become Midtown Dayton because he liked it and thought it would be catchy enough to be remembered by future generations without needing someone else’s input
