Middleburg Heights is an unincorporated community in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Middleburg Heights was George Hargrave in 1814. The name "MiddleBURGH" was given to the area by General Philip Sheridan because its only road led east from his military camp at White Sands on the Scioto River. In 1825, a group of Methodist ministers founded a church here and used what became known as "The School House." In 1851, a post office was established here and remained in operation until it closed in 1902. A cotton gin and mill were built here in 1865 by John Fenton and James Capps. A sawmill operated from 1886 to 1912; it then became a farm equipment company. An automobile dealership opened here in 1959 by Bob Ford and Raymond Lammers; it continued operation until 1978 when it merged with another dealership to form Bob Ford & Associates Inc.. The original Main Avenue store building still stands today as an auto accessories store called Ginter Hall which reopened for business on July 15th, 2009 after being vacant for several years due to foreclosure proceedings filed against the previous owner of the property.

Middleburg Heights was founded in 1810 by John Middleburg, a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner. The village was located on the north side of the river between Canal Road and Huntingdon Road. In 1836, it became part of the newly created township of Athens. In 1850, Middleburg Heights voted to become a city; it had been proposed by mayor Isaac Hogue. The vote was 5-1 with one abstention. Middleburg Heights' first mayor, James Broughton, served from 1850 to 1855. He is also credited with developing the city's first water system and its first schoolhouse. The city of Middleburg Heights grew rapidly during the 19th century; by 1870, it had over 100 citizens. It lost its status as a city in 1898 when Athens voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves a separate municipality within the new township of Athens. In 1914, during World War I, Middleburgh Heights joined forces with other villages in Northern Ohio to form Camp Grantee (later Columbus) military training campground; this helped spur economic development in that area during wartime period. The camp closed in 1919 but left an lasting legacy on that town – many businesses were established there such as Grosse Pointe Chevrolet and Wawa Super Store – which continue to operate today
