Middleburg Heights is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown–Warren-Licking Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middleburg Heights was platted in 1836 and named for Major General George Washington Middlebury. The first post office was established in 1840. In 1852, the name was changed to Middleburg Heights Park to honor Colonel John Pritchard Middlebury, an officer in the Union army who fought against Rebel forces during the American Civil War. In 1871, the town became a city under the terms of an act of Congress approved by President Ulysses S. Grant. The reason given for this change was that middleburg heights had become a enclave of wealthier people near downtown Youngstown while Warren and Licking were considered more rural areas with smaller populations. The population peaked at 3,000 in 1920 but has since declined by about 50%. Today there are just over 200 residents living within walking distance of their homes on four small blocks bounded by I-75 south on one side; US 131 east on another; US 6 north on a third; and local roads running between them forming what used to be called "the back yard." All current resident buildings were built after World War II when housing boomed as Americans returned from war duty and available sites became scarce due to forestation growth around Youngstown and other cities along Interstate 77/I-76 corridor west of Cleveland (and beyond). Middleburg Heights was originally a part of the Township of Bedford in 1824. The township was organized on February 25, 1827. On March 15, 1830, Middleburg Heights became a part of the newly created County of Athens. In 1835, Middleburg Heights was merged into the new village of Bedford and then into the new town of Athens in 1868. The village was consolidated with the town on July 1, 1870.
