The name "Middleburg" comes from an old spelling of "Middletown" and it refers to a large body of water that lay between where Middleburg Heights now stands and Cleveland proper. In 1814, George Washington visited Middleburg Heights while he was on his way to visit President James K. Polk in Pittsburgh. While in town, Washington walked across the intersection of Highways 23 and 25 and saw a house that caught his eye; he called attention to it by writing "Middleburgh" on a stick with his whip as he passed by. On December 3rd 1807, they erected a tree known as Old Elm Tree which still stands today near 9th Streets North/West Ave., just east of Center Drive off I-71W exit 443 (from I-71W when exiting into Cleveland).
