Grant attacked the Confederate army under General Joseph Johnston. The Union army was led by General Winfield Scott Hancock and the Confederate army was led by General Robert E. Lee. The battle started with a skirmish between the two armies. The Confederate forces then retreated back to their trenches while the Union forces advanced towards them. After a few minutes of fighting, both sides agreed to cease hostilities for the night. In the morning, there was more fighting taking place between the two armies. The Union force made several successful assaults against Confederate positions but were eventually forced to retreat again due to lack of resources and casualties on both sides.
Middleburg Heights is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Elyria-Marquette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middleburg Heights was laid out in 1811 by John Middleburg and his brother Samuel. The first post office was established in Middleburg Heights on March 12, 1813. The community was named for Major General George Washington Middleburgh, who served as commander of the American Expedition against France in 1793. In 1836, Middleburg Heights became part of the township of Delaware. In 1854, Delaware merged with other townships to form Medina Township. The name change reflected growth within Medina Township and changes within the larger Cleveland-Elyria-Marquette area which had experienced rapid population growth during the 1850s and 1860s spurred by new railroads and industrial development. On December 15, 1965, Middleburg Heights became a village when it incorporated as a result of an effort led by its mayor Michael J. Byrne with support from then-Cleveland Mayor Tom Barrett Jr.. In 2002, voters passed a referendum proposing thatMiddleburg Heights become an unincorporated community again under control of its own governing body known as a "village board". On November 5th 2002 Village Board members met to take action on this proposal and after much discussion voted 3 to 1 to pass this resolution into law becoming an unincorporated community once again pursuant to their proposal with all powers remaining vested in Village Board members rather than any outside source such as an elected government entity like those found in most villages today

The community was named after his father-in-law, James Middleburg, who had purchased it from William Findlay in 1795. James’s grandson, George Washington Middleburgh (1802-1875), became an important figure in town development during the late 19th century. He helped build two churches and establish a school system that later evolved into what is now known as First Presbyterian Church in Middleburg Heights. During World War II, Middleburgh Heights played an important role in support of American forces fighting in Europe. More than seventy percent of all food supply for troops stationed overseas came fromMiddleburgh Heights grocery stores during World War II. After the war ended, many residents moved out of town because they found better opportunities elsewhere. Middleburg Heights was originally part of the Township of Middleburg, in the now-defunct township of Delaware. It was laid out in 1814 and named for Major General George Washington Middleburgh, who had been a member of the United States military government at West Point. The first settler in what is now Middleburg Heights was Nicholas Weems, who arrived in 1816. Weems built a cabin on what is now Main Street. A few years later, James Caldwell bought land and built a house on what is now Fifth Avenue. In 1830, John Fenton moved to Middleburg Heights from Franklin Township and founded the first store there. In 1836, John Biddle built a home on Fourth Avenue. By 1840, most of what is today Middleburg Heights had been settled and it had become a village. In 1851, when Ohio became a state, Middleburg Heights voted to join the state as its third town; it did so by referendum. The population of Middleburgh Heights increased rapidly thanks to new housing developments and businesses that sprang up around the town square; by 1870, it had reached 2,500 people. By 1900, the population had grown to 6,000 people and by 1940 it had reached 10,000 people
