On July 1, 1815 (the day before Ohio's accession to Confederation), Cranch moved his family into their first log cabin on what is today Elmwood Avenue near Euclid Street and Third Street; it was destroyed by fire two years later but still stands as a reminder of that early settlement. After becoming United States Senator from this district (1825-29) under territorial President James Kieft, Cranch donated land east of Elmwood Avenue for what would become University Park School District No. 2 (now Cleveland State University).
