By 1854, when the first section of the Erie Canal was opened through Stark County, Miamisburg had become an important transportation hub with connections to both Cincinnati and Dayton. In 1861-1865 Miamisburg served as headquarters for Union General Ulysses S Grant during his command's campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell in Kentucky and Tennessee. During that time it also became home to one of Grant's most famous generals' staffs – known as "The Rough Riders."
