The name Miamisburg comes from the Potawatomi word me-hak (a place where maize crops are grown). Miamisburg was founded in 1814 by Captain John Pritchard and his family as a trading post on the Great Miami River between Cincinnati and Toledo. By 1840, Miamisburg had become one of the largest settlements in Stark County with 4,000 residents. In 1845, Miamisburg became an incorporated town when it absorbed its neighbor to the north – Westville. The railroad reached Miamisburg in 1854 and quickly made it a busy commercial center with stores and hotels catering to travelers coming through central Ohio en route to Detroit or Cincinnati. Manufacturing also grew rapidly during this time; shoes were one of the first products marketed here. In 1865, Westville merged into Miamisburg and continued to grow until 1925 when it became its own independent city. Today, many of the buildings that once stood in downtown Miamisburgh remain standing including two original steamboats which were used for passenger service until 1919 and 1923 respectively; both now house businesses tied to their former locations. One block east of Main Street lies what was once called "the greenmarket", which served as a farmers market from May through October each year until 1978 when it closed because of development nearby; today's market occupies space that formerly housed several banks along with other small businesses dating back to early 19th century times serving this district alone make up what has been known locally simply as "The GreenMarket".
