After years of neglect, fortWashington was renovated again in 1923 under then Director General Charles Lindbergh's initiative to provide improved fire support for U.S.-Mexico operations during World War II. Colonel James Monroe's father-in-law had also been living there when it was laid out; he later became the first U.S. President from Ohio (1828–1829). In 1824, General John Forbes made an attack on the Monongahela Indian Nation near present day Miamisburg and burned their village and some crops - an event which forever changed the course of local history as it led to many settlement opportunities for early Americans within Muskingum County! The community quickly grew into a busy commercial center with several stores, a schoolhouse, post office and other public services available to residents. By 1830, many of these businesses were converted into homes or storefronts;Miamisburg would remain this way until annexation by Akron in 1907! On July 5, 1792, the first permanent settlement in what is now Miamisburg was made by a group of fur traders from Montreal. The area had been part of the Northwest Territory since 1776 and became part of the United States after the Treaty of Paris in 1801. In 1813, Miamisburg was chartered as an incorporated town and named for George Washington Miamis, an early settler. Miamisburg grew rapidly during the 1800s as a center for trade with other parts of America and Europe. Manufacturing began to grow in Miamisburg after new mills were built near the town center in the late 19th century. By 1920, Miamisburg had over 60 businesses and employed over 1,500 people. During World War II, Miamisburg was home to many American soldiers who served in various theaters of war. Some notable residents include former President Richard Nixon (1946-2007), General James Mattis (born 1942), Lt. General Michael Flynn (Retired) (45th U.S Army Asia Commander) and Admiral Harry Harris Jr.(Retired).
