Miamisburg, Ohio is a small town in the Miami Valley region of northeastern Ohio. It is located on the southern border of Trumbull County, about northwest of the city of Cleveland and east of Akron. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Miamisburg was first populated by Shawnee and Potawatomi Native Americans. The first white settler in what is now Miamisburg was James Kapp, who arrived in 1796. He built a log cabin on the east side of the river near today's downtown Miamisburg. Kapp named his settlement after his home state, Michigan, which he had seen while traveling through that territory during his exploration days before arriving in America. Kapp's Cabin still stands and is open to visitors every day from 9am to 4pm (closed Mondays). In 1802, John Cederholm purchased land north of present-day Miamisburg from Kapp and built a mill on Elk Creek. Two years later, he erected a larger mill on Wabash Avenue downstream from where the current Millbrook Drive meets Elk Creek. Cederholm became one of early settlers in what would become Miamisburg; he died in 1824 at age 80 years old when his property passed into hands of his son Lewis Cederholm Jr." In 1812–13, Daniel Dunham moved to what would become Miamisborg along with his family after purchasing 640 acres (250 hectares) northeast of modern-day Ironton Township from Major Samuel Blanchard for $1 per acre ($22/km2). By 1830 – following purchase by Anthony White – all but three families living within present day Miamisburgh had relocated there: Anthony White himself became proprietor/builder/miller (1830), John Haggerty (1833), and Cornelius Weems (1836). Weems acquired additional land between Bigelow Road south and US Route 40 westward over time until it encompassed all or most of what exists today as Elmhurst Avenue between Bigelow Road and Elmhurst Drive." Some key events leading up to European contact with present-day Miamisburg include: Indian Removal Act - November 12th, 1800 - United States Congress passes legislation allowing for Ulysses S Grant to lead military forces against American Indians living west of Lake Erie "to take them thenceforth under our jurisdiction" March 20th Treaty - On March 20thof 1800 Ulysses S Grant signs treaty with Five Civilized Tribes including the Potawatomi Nation trading goods for removal westward Mayflower Compact - July 16th 1775 - Connecticut's General Court ratifies United colonies' application for political independence becoming New England Confederation --this act creates both Pennsylvania Colony & Rhode Island Colony
The town of Miamisburg was founded in 1814 by General George Rogers Clark and his army after they repelled an attack by the Creek Nation. The town grew rapidly, and by 1832 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1836, Miamisburg became part of the newly formed state of Ohio. The city's growth slowed during the 1840s as new railroads were built in the area, but resumed during the 1850s when a railroad bypassed Miamisburg. By 1860, Miamisburg had a population of over 4,000 people. During the American Civil War, Miamisburg served as a garrison for Spoiler Mill on Battle Creek River. After Ohio joined Confederate States of America in 1861, Miamisburg became part of Union City and continued to grow until 1870 when it reverted to its original name.
