He began construction on a mill that would serve as a center for local production of flour and other goods. When finally completed in 1845, Ziegler's mill changed not only Miamisburg but also much of eastern Ohio into an agricultural society by producing high quality flour that could be sold throughout the region without leaving town. A post office called Miamisburg was established in 1850; it was discontinued in 1865. The name change may have been because residents had difficulty pronouncing "muh-mee-rih" as "miee-rah". Miamisburg became an incorporated village on November 2, 1907 by vote of its citizens via referendum (#431). At that time it contained 572 residents and had a total assessed valuation at $27 million (2010 dollars). On July 8th 2009 US Steel announced plans to close its plant in nearby Youngstown due to economics unrelated to steel production which has resulted in significant layoffs over the past few years particularly among low wage workers there
