The first European to visit what would become Miamisburg was Captain John Smith on his Hunting Ground Expedition in 1795. A post office called Miamisburg was established in 1811, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The town began as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. There were also several slave auctions that took place here from 1861-1865; these sales helped finance Union military campaigns against Confederate forces. Miamisburgs original growth came about when railroads arrived in the area after nearbyCVandalia became an important transportation hub for rich easterners traveling to Cincinnati and Springfield. In 1881, a new incorporated village named Dayton was founded just east of Miamisburg and quickly grew due to its proximity to both towns and its easy access to good agricultural land. On July 4, 1907, Miamisburg became the seat of government for Medina County when it replaced Dayton as county seat following a vote by residents of both villages over objections from Dayton Mayor George Warton Jr.. On November 5, 1907 Delaware Township along with parts of Scioto Township were annexed into Miamisberg following approval from the state Board of Commissioners. This change increased the size of Miamisburgh from 2 square miles (5 km²) to 8 square miles (20 km²). In 1941 referendum voters approved annexing portions of Scioto Township into the town limits but this annexation did not take effect because township trustees objected to being lumped with their fellow township members into one municipality without their own elected officials. In 1951 referendum voters approved annexing all but two square miles (10 km²) of Scioto Township intotown limits – making it now an unincorporated community known as Scioto Annexation – but this annexation did not take effect because township trustees objected to becoming an unelected body that could pass ordinances without proper approval from their peers within their own municipality
