The village of Mentor was founded in 1824 by Captain John P. Mentor and his family as a trading post on the Great Miami River. In 1857, captain Mentor donated land for a public school and built a courthouse on what is now State Route 281. In 1863, commissioners added to the village's name when they named it after George Washington Park in Rome, New York (now called Mount Vernon). In 1870, captain Mentor donated land for an industrial park that became known as "Mentor." By 1900, there were 10 businesses in the village and its schools had received $50 per student from state appropriations. In 1907, president William McKinley appointed James Wickersham as Commissioner of Education to provide impetus for increased education spending throughout America's midwestern regions. Wickersham directed that much of the money destined for education be redirected into new programs such as technical colleges and high schools which would not have been possible without mentors like mentor himself who believed in change and progress. As a result of Wickersham's efforts, more than 1 million students graduated with certificates or degrees between 1907 and 1918 alone! mentored students through American Technical College (later renamed Toledo Tech), Northern Kentucky University (then Eastern Kentucky University) - all located within one mile of where mentor lived until his death on October 15th, 2002 at age 91 years old! Mentor, Ohio is a small town in the Muskingum County of Ohio on the border with Kentucky. The population was 2,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. Mentor began as a small farming community in 1811 when a group of Methodist missionaries, led by Rev. David Wilkinson, arrived to preach and help reform Methodism in what is now Muskingum County. The missionaries built a school and preached there until 1815 when they left for Cincinnati to found the First Baptist Church there. However, Wilkinson's congregation soon grew too large so he founded another church in Mentor in 1817 and named it after himself – Second Baptist Church. In 1824, Mentor became one of three townships within Muskingum County; this made it an official village under the jurisdiction of Canandaigua Township but remained administratively separate from nearby Dayton until 1861 when it merged into that township along with other villages within Canandaigua Township including Findlay (now Centerville). The first post office opened in Mentor on December 5, 1825; its name was changed to Mentor Post Office on January 3, 1827 due to its proximity to neighboring Wayneville. In 1840, mentoring landowner James Guthrie donated 8 acres (3 ha) east of town for use as a public square which later became known as Guthrie Parkette after him. The first store opened here in 1850 and remains open today as The Guthrie Store Inc.; it was replaced by a larger store building in 1951-1957 which burned down during an arson attack by juveniles In 1865-1866, Mentor became home to two days' worth of national anti-slavery agitation organized by Samuel Morse while he was visiting America from England; his wife Lyman Gwinston served as organizer and secretary On July 25th 1870 local residents erected an early model farmstead known as Harmony Grove near present day Union City; it still stands today atopable hill northeast side Mound Road In 1896-1900 severalement housing development called Highland Village was built adjacent to Main Street between Third Street south and Fourth Street west; this area now includes McKnight Park neighborhood southeast side Union City In 1902-1904 local resident John Hargrave donated land east of town for use as an agricultural fairgrounds which were renamed Fairfield Downs after him During World War II (1939-1945), many factories were located just outside or near Canton where manufacturing jobs were generated during peacetime production stopped abruptly because war production needed less labor than anticipated After World War II continued growth occurred due primarily to suburban migration from surrounding counties into Muskingum County resulting in more people livingwithin easy commuting distanceAccessible transportation also played significant roleHowever much smallertown's economy has been overall comparedto largercities and towns throughout central Ohio
