Mentor was a town in Putnam County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Mentor was John Hibbard and his wife Hannah in 1812. They named the place after their mentor, Ebenezer Howard. In 1814, they built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. The Hibbons were among the first to trade with what is now Delaware County. In 1827, they moved to a gristmill on Beaver Creek which they operated until 1830 when they sold it to James Waddell. In 1830-31, Mentor had two blacksmiths - Elijah Ryder and Nicholas Hines - who did much of the work for local farmers while also providing services to their white neighbors. In 1835, Mentor became part of the newly formed "Cleveland Township". With its growth came new industry: lumbering and sawmilling began operation here in 1840 from mills located near Cleveland and Akron; by 1850 there were 10 mills in operation in town alone producing lumber and other products such as flour and cheese. Manufacturing continued into the 20th century with several plants built during World War II including one that produced munitions from raw materials gathered from all over eastern Ohio; steel production began here too but petrochemical plants took over later2000). Mentor has experienced many changes throughout its history including being annexed by Cleveland in 1905; becoming an unincorporated village within Cleveland following annexation; serve as part of Euclid Heights until 1972 when it became an independent municipality again; experiencing another annexation leading to its current status as a borough only due to voter initiative (the city limits do not extend into Mentor proper); experiencing two fires that destroyed most of downtown between 1897-98 and 2001-2002 both resulting in damage estimated at $50K each (the latest fire occurred on June 6th 2019 which killed four people – three firefighters and one civilian - total losses amounting to over $150K so far).

They founded the village of Mentor on the Scioto River. In 1814, they donated land to the town for a public square and meeting house. The townsite was named after their mentor, Ebenezer Dickinson, an early settler in what is now Akron. In 1825, the trustees voted to erect a courthouse and library within the town limits. The structure was completed two years later and became known as "Dickinson Hall". In 1829, Mentor became part of Dayton Township when it was established through an act of the General Assembly. On July 1, 1850, it incorporated as a city under its own charter with a population of 10,000 residents. Despite this increase in population size, only 954 people lived in downtown by 1960; however by 2000 that number had grown to 161 residents living on five blocks within walking distance of City Hall (now called "First Unitarian Church"). On November 3rd 1920 Mentor's first fire destroyed most of downtown including much of historic Dickinson Hall before finally putting out all fires over night - one which still remainsociety record!
