Mentor, Ohio is a city in the Lima County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census. The city and its surrounding rural area were named for George Mentor, an early settler of that region. Mentor is located on the eastern edge of the Ottawa–Girard National Forest and shares borders with Lucasville to the east and Blue Ash to the west. The Chillicothe River forms part of its southern border. The Erie Canal passed through Mentor in 1825 and connected it with Toledo. In 1836, Mentor became one of three cities in what would become Cleveland County when it was organized from parts of Lake Erie beyond the newly acquired land from Detroit. In 1868, Mentor was platted as a townsite on land that had been given to him by General David Hunter at Fort Pittskee Township southeast of present-day Cleveland. By 1870, all of what would become Lima County had been organized except for Mentor Village which remained unincorporated until 1895. A post office called Mentor was established in 1872, and continued operation until 1907; mentoring was first written down as "eastern" or "north central". A new post office opened in 1907 under the name Blue Ash; it continued operations until 1960 when it changed its name to Lucasville after James Ewing Lucas who donated land for that purpose along with $200 cash prize (the first such prize ever given out by US Post Office). mentoring has since been spelled "mantle" or "mentorship." A high school was built in 1902 on portions of lot #2 where East High School now stands adjacent to Interstate 495/US Route 621 south east of downtown Cleveland; this also served as Greenfield Central High School until 1990 when it merged into Cleveland State University's main campus. In 1944 an annex to Greenfeld Central High School (now known as Northwood Middle School) was built off Harbor Drive which served as both a high school and middle school before becoming an adult daycare center known today as PreK-12 Center before being renamed Westlake Intermediate School prior to closing in 2002 due to budget cuts brought about by then Superintendent Leo Castillo himself within his own district - marking yet another instance where public education within his own district resulted in closure or loss of services for students not only inside his district but also outside!
