In 1785, a group of men from Mentor, Ohio started a rifle club. The club used rifles that were made with iron sights and had no stocks. They called their rifles “Mentor Guns”. In 1825, the first shooting competition was held in Mentor with 9 participants. There were no rules for the competition and anyone could compete. The first winnings were $6.00 each. From 1825-1851, there were 5 shoots held in Mentor County and only 1 winner was declared each time. In 1852, the first annual meeting of the county board of education was held in Mentor and all Board members came to attend including Captains John Ladd and Samuel Henson who both shot pistols at that meeting. Captain Ladd won every shoot from then on until 1865 when he died suddenly at an early age while attending a shoot in Perrysburg (now part of Cleveland). Samuel Henson also competed at that meeting but did not win any money or trophies but he did receive recognition for his participation by being placed second in the gun section with a muzzleloader! In 1865, Captain Ladd’s brother-in-law Elijah Burchill became captain of the local militia unit which included shotguns so competitions began to be held using shotguns as well as rifles which led to increased prize money available for winners! By 1881, over 50 shooters from surrounding counties participated in shootings taking place throughout central Ohio under various conditions such as rain or shine!
