Mentor, Ohio was in the process of becoming a city on November 5th, 1802 when it was chartered as the Town of Mentor by Governor George Rogers Clark. The town boundaries were expanded to include what is now the cities of Cleveland and Youngstown on December 1st, 1803. On January 1st, 1814, Mentor became part of the new Northwest Territory when Ohio became a state. During World War II, Mentor was home to two military installations: Fort Myer and Camp Murray.
Mentor, Ohio is a town of about 21,000 residents in the Kiamis Township Conservation District. It lies at the confluence of the Maumee River and Scioto River, making it a strategic location for water resources. The Kiamis Township Conservation District was created in 1934 and covers an area that includes Mentor and parts of Holmesburg, Tiffin and Painesville. The township is home to many important natural resources such as quarries for stone and granite, forests with longleaf pine, oak trees, and beech trees, as well as fisheries including walleye and catfish. The present building on Elm Street was built in 1951-52 by Mrs. Loretta Purdy (1911-2001) after she donated part of her estate to support education in rural communities throughout Ohio. In 1932 Mayor Homer Sievers (1920-2002) founded the first fire department in Mentor with three trucks and six men; today there are ten departments with over 1,000 firefighters serving all of Lucas County! Mentor was founded in 1821 as a small cottonseed mill town on the Scioto River in central Ohio. The town rapidly grew and by 1830 it had an enrollment of 100 people.
