The earliest known reference to Mentor comes from an account written by Captain John Smith in 1735 when he noted that there were two villages on the Scioto River named "Mendoza" and "Liguria". By 1740, both villages had grown large enough to temporarily move into new locations within what is now Mahoning County - possibly due to flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew which struck southern Ohio in October 1992. By 1836, General George Stephenson had settled what is now Mentor on land purchased from Native Americans ceded following their Treaty Of Hopewell (1802). Mentor is a town in the Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name of the town came from John Mentor and his son Jonathan Mentor. mentor-on-the-mound Mentor was platted in 1811 by members of the Methodist church as part of a larger land grant to Christopher Morrissey. In 1814, other members of the Methodist church created a new plat for Mentor Township which became an incorporated village in 1827. The first settler inmentor on-the-mound may have been Master George Walton who built a log cabin in 1775 near today's intersection of High Street and Rome Road. Walton operated a gristmill until about 1840 when it burned down and he moved to Lima. There he took over operation of the local post office and tavern which continued under his ownership until it closed around 1870 when mail stopped being sent there because transportation improved so much that it no longer made economic sense to send goods by horse or wagon across the water to Lima via boatloads of mailbags brought back from Cincinnati each week. In 1871, Jonathan Mentor donated land east of Centre Street for what would become Mentor Elementary School; this school opened its doors on October 15th, 1872. The township also established Agricultural College (now Wright State University) in 1865 with help from industrialist Andrew Carnegie and others including Methodists Isaac Pusey and James Kinchloe Sr., both residents of neighboring Athensville. By 1830, more than 60%of all agricultural production in Muskingum County was done within ten miles of Warsaw where most people lived then as well as now except for Starkfield where manufacturing has replaced agriculture as the primary source Sugarbeet production does today with some small family farms still engaged in horticulture however sugar beet is no longer their primary focus
