In 1861, Benjamin Franklin Conklin established a school for white children and started giving financial aid to black children in Cleveland Township until he too moved to Mentor after getting dissatisfied with conditions there. In 1865, he started building what is now known as "The White House" on Elm Street – later renamed the Ben Franklin Elementary School – which continues to be used by Mentor Public Schools today. In 1905, James Ault founded JAX Broadcasting Corporation with bandwidth allocation from the Western Electric company for radio station WJAX-TV from Toledo (the only stations licensed at that time outside of Philadelphia). That same year also saw the opening of WLW-TV Channel 8 which became one of Cincinnati's original TV outlets when it began broadcasting on October 15th 1925 from studios located on Elmwood Avenue just north of Commercial Drive between Second and Third Streets in downtown Cincinnati. Mentor has had its own post office since 1836; however, it closed its doors temporarily due to lack of mail service following the Panic Of 1907 during which many small towns throughout Ohio lost their businesses due to stock market crashes across eastern US Cities such as Cleveland and Buffalo etc.). The reopening date for letters sent through this office was November 15th 1912 after being re coordinated by then Postmaster General Homer Sicking who said "It will be an extra pleasure for us not have any letter delivery problems." Today Mentor features several historical landmarks including: "The White House" built by James Ault Jr., WLW-TVChannel 8 from 1925 - present day broadcasts out their main studio on Elmwood Ave #2 just north of Commercial Dr between 2nd & 3rd Sts inside city limits cntywide w/ commentary programming daily 5pm-midnight est; Blacksmith Shop built c 1870's by Benjamin Franklin Conklin bf's father orangeman shop opened here too but shuttered when dad moved away younguns not old enough req'd help so mommy did laundry here plz ; Old Jail site where men were incarcerated before court system went away c1900s; Griggs Mill - construction started here 1830s d stopped because water supply ran out long before end d griggs built flour mill 4x4 feet high x 50 feet wide strung together along length w/out floors ht idled all day 10 feet below ground because noone could afford masonry when they hit rock bottom
