Mentor is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the border of Michigan and Ontario. The population was 25,581 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Summit County after Zanesville. In 1824, when Ohio became a state, Mentor was one of its first towns and served as its capital for two years until Greenfield was chosen as its new capital in 1830. The original name of Mentor was Easton. The first settlers in what is now Mentor were surveyors who established a townsite on the west bank of the Ashtabula River in 1814. In 1825, the people of Mentor petitioned for incorporation as a village because they desired more than just agricultural land to raise their families on. On December 3, 1827, incorporation as a Village became effective and Mentor began to grow rapidly as an industrial center with potash mining and other heavy industry coming soon after.
